STUDENT ENTRANCE
PROFILE (KSEP)
With the Cradle to Career
Partnership, StanREADY Action Team
(a collaborative impact project for the
community), Child & Family Services
uses the Kindergarten Student
Entrance Profile (KSEP) to assess
school readiness skills of all four year
old Head Start children just before
they leave the program to enroll in
Kindergarten. KSEP is an
observation-based tool, backed by
research, which scores skill levels
within a range of “not yet, emerging,
almost mastered, & mastered” across
the following measures:
Social-Emotional Items:
1) Seeks adult help when appropriate
2) Engages in cooperative play activities with
peers
3) Exhibits impulse control & self-regulation
4) Maintains attention to tasks
5) Is enthusiastic & curious about school
6) Persists with tasks after experiencing
difficulty
School-Ready Knowledge Items:
7) Recognizes own written name
8) Demonstrates expressive verbal abilities
9) Understands that numbers represent
quantity
10) Writes own name
11) Recognizes colors
12) Recognizes shapes
13) Names upper case alphabet letters

Head Start Children:
Scored “Almost
Mastered” or higher
Due to COVID-19 & transition to distance learning,
KSEP was not administered in 2019-2020.
