CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT SCORING
SYSTEM (CLASS)
Child & Family Services uses the Classroom Assessment Scoring System
(CLASS) to aid in teacher preparations and professional development. A
Certified CLASS Observer typically observes preschool teachers for 4
cycles, looks at the quality of interaction between teachers and children,
and rates teachers from 1-7 in the following domains:
Emotional Support
Looks at what teachers do to help children develop warm,
supportive relationships, feel comfortable, and experience levels of
independence.
Dimensions:
Positive Climate, Negative Climate, Teacher Sensitivity, Regard for
Student Perspectives
Classroom Organization
Considers how teachers manage children’s time, attention, and
behavior to maximize learning opportunities. It looks at
interactions that help children develop skills to regulate their own
behavior.
Dimensions:
Behavior Management, Productivity, Instructional Learning Formats
Instructional Support
Refers to specific behaviors that support children’s cognitive
development and language growth
Dimensions:
Concept Development, Quality of Feedback, Language Modeling
